Valley Tweed—From Our Home in West Yorkshire
The history of Rowan is deeply embedded in the textile industry in the north of England. In 2017 we introduced our 100% wool tweed yarn, woollen spun and dyed at a local historic mill in Huddersfield.
A Unique Yarn in the Making
Spun for Rowan by Gardiner Yarns, who’ve been spinning tweed yarns since 1896, this bespoke yarn is made in the same way as the traditional tweeds used for weaving into the iconic tweed cloth Yorkshire is known for.
A 100% wool tweed is plied with 100% lambswool to create a heritage knitting yarn
The two ends of yarn, which are dyed differently, twist around each other to create a traditional colour palette with rich complexity. The shades are inspired by, and named for, the surrounding valleys and features of the Yorkshire landscape.
A yarn made for knitters who love a crisp wool with traditional qualities
Woolen-spun yarns tend to have a light and lofty structure that traps air, making them lightweight yet incredibly warm, and durable. This type of spinning creates a yarn that is perfect for Fair Isle knitting—the colours tend to meld together a little when knit, with slightly blurred edges making them blend beautifully.
