Whatever the season, the seaside town of Stonehaven has much to offer. The stunning Dunottar Castle, Art Deco open air swimming pool (it’s heated!), infamous Fire Ball Swinging, Folk & Harbour Festivals, award-winning ice cream and of course, Baa! A small but beautiful space, Baa! is home to a range of quality and luxury yarns from some of the best producers, independent spinners, dyers and designers from the UK and beyond. Each brand has been carefully chosen with the emphasis on quality in natural fibres.

Owner Janice Anderson tells us more, “When I opened Baa! my vision was for a space which welcomed everyone. A place to drop in, have a cuppa, knit, crochet and chat. The shop immediately became home to our already established knit group who previously met in my home. However, I quickly realised this would not meet the needs of the enthusiatic fibre folk of Stonehaven and surrounding area. Two years on we have three weekly groups and it has been such a joy to enable the development of friendships, listen to the varied topics of conversation, sharing of skills and laughter.”

“I fell in love with the Rowan brand as a textiles student in Aberdeen where my local fibre haunt was Harlequin, a beautiful little yarn shop which once stood in the West End of the city. Back then it was Rowan yarn, design and photography that inspired my love of handknitting. During the following 30+ years I spent time as a freelance knit designer, and a Rowan Design Consultant and tutor. So, its not at all surprising that the Rowan brand features heavily on the shelves of my own little yarn shop!”

"Felted Tweed DK was first to make an appearance and it continues to be one of our best sellers. In addition we now stock Kidsilk Haze, Softyak DK, Alpaca Classic, Alpaca Soft DK, Brushed Fleece and Kid Classic, as well a selection of Rowan Magazines, brochures and pattern books by Rowan favourites such as Kim Hargreaves, ARNE & CARLOS and Marie Wallin. In such a small space we are unable to stock the entire colour palette for each yarn range but we are always happy to fullfil specific requests and have loyal customers who choose to support our high street shop rather than buying online."

"In addition to yarn, a large part of the Baa! business is the workshop schedule which runs a packed programme all year round. With regular crochet tutors Dorothy Petrie and Fiona Meade, we teach beginner to advanced classes in all aspects of crochet. Knitting techniques and topics are taught by myself and by invited tutors such as Katherine Lymer, Karie Westermann, Carol Meldrum and local miniaturist Helena Wilton who teaches knitting on 1.5mm needles!"

"Other topics such as driftwood figures by artist Liz Reed, macrame & needle punching by fibre artsit Stephanie Fradette and Dorset Buttons with TJFrogg add a little extra to our repetoire as we continually seek out new tutors and topics to tempt our enthusiastic participants.”
